About the event
As part of the 2026 Verde Valley Butterfly Checklist Challenge, Denise Gibbs will lead a group of butterfly enthusiasts to search for the elusive and rare Goatweed leafwing butterfly. We will stop at butterfly gardens and trailside areas to identify and learn about other butterfly species as well. The mostly flat trail is in full sun, so plan accordingly. Restrooms available.
The hike is free, but a park entry fee of $10/adult is required unless you have an AZ state parks annual pass. Rain or heavy cloud cover will postpone the event to April 30. Register early; hike is limited to 12 participants. Adults only. Bring binoculars. Meet on the rooftop viewing deck above the visitor center.
